WhatsApp is working on chat themes for the web client, adding a future personalization option that would bring colorful chat bubbles, new wallpapers and more control over how conversations look in the browser. The feature is still in development and is not yet available for beta testing.
WhatsApp Web’s chat themes are in development
The planned update would let users change the look of chats directly on WhatsApp Web. Instead of a plain default interface, conversations could show themed backgrounds with matching bubble colors.
The web version is being built around the same basic idea already shown on mobile: a more customized chat view that users can tune to their taste. WhatsApp has said the themes are only visible to the person applying them, so the changes stay private on each account.
Preset themes, color choices, and wallpaper options
On mobile, WhatsApp’s chat themes include preset combinations that change both the background and the bubbles. Users can also mix colors rather than sticking to one fixed look.
WhatsApp has also added 30 new wallpaper options in the mobile rollout, along with the ability to apply one theme across all chats or set different themes for individual conversations. Channels can use themes as well.
For WhatsApp Web, one early estimate points to up to 49 color options, but that figure has not been confirmed by WhatsApp itself. The exact mix of colors, wallpapers and theme controls on the browser version is still not settled.
Availability and scope remain open
WhatsApp Web chat themes are not yet available for beta testing, and the rollout timing is still unclear.
That leaves a few open questions for the browser version: whether it will match the mobile feature set exactly, how many color choices it will include, and when users will start seeing it in the web client.
